Interpretation, that is. Like Bach or Bob Dylan, The Beatles’ music can stand up to a wide range of other people’s ideas of how their music can be presented. The 50th anniversary of their coming to America brought this home again via a wonderful TV tribute to them in which their tunes were interpreted by a number of fine contemporary performers.
I’ve been writing a six-days a week feature on YouTube, Cool Music and Video, since 2010. In April of that year, I presented a special Beatles cover week, so it now seems appropriate to share it with you. Please have a look at these videos, as they present and enhance John, Paul, George and Ringo’s music in new and sometimes truly exciting ways.
4/19/10 – Ok, all you youngsters out there – it’s special Beatles cover week on Cool Music and Video. First, heed this warning – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vicAOQ6QDGs, and then, watch this cover of Across the Universe – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqRxi6G7Dro and realize the destructive potential of their music. Horrible isn’t it?
4/20/10 – The great Jeff Beck’s take on A Day in the Life – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPBqk-0gWfQ for your Tuesday – and yes, there is a brief glimpse of Jimmy Page in the audience.
4/21/10 – Let’s start midweek with While My Guitar Gently Weeps, performed by the amazing Jake Shimabukuro – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puSkP3uym5k. Then, for a quick blast of contrast, try Bonerama – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cnzqvU43DY and their take on Yer Blues. Fun with Beatles covers.
4/22/10 – One of my favorite Beatles covers from the 60s, Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66 and Fool on the Hill – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEHckjjbE8I. Then, an unlikely cover, James Brown’s take on Something – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4u0OwmlNfF4. Cool Music and Video fears no music – well, almost none…
4/23/10 – I’m not usually a fan of Alanis Morisette, but I do like her version of Dear Prudence – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeGgT5XEnxs. I also like Crosby, Stills and Nash’s Blackbird – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSxkhZsHdkY&feature=related, but you might prefer other interpretations by Sarah McLachlan or Carly Simon they’re both there too.
4/24/10 – And once more, for all you youngsters, The Beatles – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7NoOhmVMac. Let’s close the week with the boys cover version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Doesn’t John make a lovely Thisbe?
Happy weekend from Cool Music and Video, and from SoundWordSight.
