I recently found a lovely short film featuring the mysterious and beautiful paintings and drawings of the French symbolist Odilon Redon (1840-1916). It’s quite a nice survey of his work.
I love Redon’s sense of color, and his willingness to bang, say oranges against dark blues – seemingly in violation of established rules of gradation or complement. I also love the easy evocation of ancient or exotic subject matter into his work. And very few have painted flowers with as much beauty and depth of understanding.
